“1 DECEMBRIE 1918” UNIVERSITY OF ALBA IULIA was set up as a public higher education and research institution founded pursuant to the Romanian Government Decision no. 474/09.07.1991. Its name is related to the historical moment (1918) when the union of the three Romanian provinces was accomplished in Alba Iulia. In 2009, following the institutional assessment carried out by the Executive Bureau of the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education – ARACIS, “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia was awarded a HIGH CONFIDENCE RATING, the highest qualification for Romanian universities.

Our university consists of 4 faculties (7 teaching departments), 17 research centres and 7 administrative centres.

THE FACULTY OF HISTORY AND PHILOLOGY brings together the undergraduate academic programmes in Humanities of our University. The Faculty of History and Philology consists of two large departments: the Department of History, Archaeology and Museology, and the Department of Philology.

THE FACULTY OF ORTHODOX THEOLOGY was founded in 1990, after the fall of the atheistic totalitarian regime in Romania. It is co-founder of the “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia, together with the Faculty of History and Philology.

Student Services

Accommodation
The University has 4 modern Student Residence Halls, with a total capacity of 948 places. The standard facilities and appliances in each Residence Hall include triple bed rooms with modern furniture, bathroom, refrigerator, TV, Internet connection, a launderette, a multifunctional hall, study rooms and kitchens with gas stoves and electric hoods.
The cost of accommodation in the Student Residence Halls is 130 lei (approx. 30 Euro)/person/month. The Centre for International Relations and the Student Services office at “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia will help you apply for accommodation.

The University Restaurant
Students can have lunch at the University Restaurant located on campus with the following facilities: a lunch room with 200 seats, 2 cocktail rooms for special occasions (social events, conferences, and official meetings) with 39 seats; an automatic line for preparing food with modern kitchen appliances. The Restaurant also offers lunch à la carte. The University has a snackbar with an open-air terrace (during summer time), as well as outdoor recreational areas within the historical grounds of Alba Iulia Fortress.
The University Restaurant provides lunch on a regular basis on week days; and breakfast and dinner on request only. A 3-course menu costs approx. 15 lei (3.3 Euro).

Students’ Sports Centre
There are two gyms owned by the University available to its students, which are suitable for different sports activities such as: fitness, body-building, football, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, and handball.
CSU Alba Iulia is the University’s International Women’s Basketball Team playing in the First Division of Romanian Women’s Basketball Competitions.

The University Library
The University Library is a modern, computerised library with a stock of over 100,000 volumes (together with the Archbishopric Library) that cover almost all fields of interest. The Orthodox Archbishopric Library is located on the premises of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology and provides services which are similar to the ones of the University Library, both sharing a common database.
The Library services are open to all University students, researchers, teaching professionals and administrative staff.
The database of the Library can be accessed through the OPAC software. The library is organised on home loan and reading rooms with over 100 seats, offering free access to the shelf. Access to the Library collections is based on a library card (2 Euros), issued in accordance with Library bylaws.

The academic year is divided into two semesters and two examination periods:

First examination session: January 21 – February 17
Intersemestrial holiday: February 18 – February 24
Spring semester: February 25 – May 15
Second examination session: May 15 – June 30
Summer holiday: July 1 – September 30

Cost of Living: minimum 120 Euros/month:
120 Euro x 12 months = 1,440 Euro/year
1 Euro = 4.53 RON
